Step 1 - Initial Enquiries
People Who are ‘Furthest from the Job Market’
If you are a person (or you represent someone) who has difficulty accessing education, training and employment opportunities because of a disability, health problem or other disadvantage you can contact SPPOT directly to find out about current routes to funding (or self-funding) your training with us.
You can also contact your social worker, care manager, support worker, CPN or other professional who works with you, who should be able to find out the best way for you to access our courses and volunteering opportunities.
We can arrange drop-in sessions for people waiting to start training and anyone else who is interested in getting to know more about SPPOT.
If you are a participant/member of an organisation who is helping you to find training and volunteering opportunities, you can also speak to them about the SPPOT courses and training opportunities. Some organisations can fund your training, and support you in other ways (such as transport) to access the courses.
If you are a person with on-going disabilities or health related difficulties and you do not have any professional support, please contact us at SPPOT and we will do our best help you to access our training and volunteering opportunities.
You can also contact us by clicking the button or send us an application for training using the 'Apply Online' button below

Step 2 - Pre-Course Assessment
SPPOT’s main aim is to provide training for adults and young poeple who experience barriers to work or education.
In order to enable every individual to access the courses, each of which are offered at three to six different levels, we need to assess which Level course is needed before booking and it is also important for prospective Trainees to learn all they need about the course.
We strongly recommend all prospective trainees come and meet the staff and get to know what we do, before booking. There are a number of ways to do this:
Initial Meeting
Once an individual has decided to embark on a programme of training with SPPOT, an informal meeting between the trainee and a member of staff will be arranged to complete the initial information.
The initial meeting will record all the information SPPOT will need to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all trainees on each course, including emergency contacts and any health needs that are relevant for us to know e.g. allergies, disabilities and also to inform our risk assessment for each course.
This meeting will also record the needs and aspirations of the trainee and the trainee’s intended outcomes i.e.:

- In the short term e.g. during and after the first course
- The medium term e.g. future training needs
- Ambitions in the long term i.e. what the trainee would like the training to lead to.
This meeting will also enable us to:
- Take account of each individual’s own needs and wishes with regards to the methods of teaching and assessment that will be used on the course.
- Plan and modify the course so it is appropriate for each trainee.
- Assess the trainee’s experience with dogs, in order to provide dogs of the right temperament, size and strength for that person.
- Confirm the means by which the course(s) will be paid for and when payment will be made.
- Help trainees to plan their transport to and from the training course, their lunch arrangements and to ask any questions they wish.
